This week we had a visiting preacher, Clyde Thomas. Clyde is the pastor of Victory Church, the Elim Pentecostal Church in Cwbran. He spoke from Luke 9:1-6 and the topic of “Power and Authority”. A sermon outline is below.
Three things that I want to say to you today.
1. God wants your attention
2. God wants to speak to you
3. God wants you to take a step of obedience towards Him.
He called them together.
Jesus calls the twelve together. He requests their attention. The place was packed – loads of miracles had just taken place. But Jesus requests the attention of the twelve. Amidst the crowd God is getting your attention. Oh Lord give us ears to hear and eyes to see. When He had their attention, He spoke some things to them and then He told them what to do. The rest was up to them. They needed to obey what He had said.
Things happen in togetherness. We come together for gathered moments like these, not so that we can just attend a building; we could do that anywhere. No, we come together to gather in His name and get built up and encouraged for the mission of our lives. We then leave here as scattered servants; with a mandate on our lives to fulfil in this generation. School teachers, Factory Workers, Social workers, Labourers, Builders, Engineers, Care workers, Post men, Plumbers, Bus drivers, Councillors, Business owners, Unemployed. Wherever you are in the world you have a mandate on your life.
God knit you together and stamped your life with His divine image. It got broken through sin, but everyday His mission is at work in your heart to restore the image of God on your life.
He gave them power and authority.
God wants you to walk the walk of faith with power and authority. You are destined to demonstrate the power of God in your daily life. What’s so beautiful is that at this point, in Luke 9, Jesus was letting a few people loose. It was kind of like an experiment. We now live in the age of the Church. His bride. a called out and sent people with a mandate and responsibility for our generation. The church is not bricks and mortar its people like you and me.
Power – Dunamis (capacity). Authority – the right to act
He qualified and authorised them! You may feel like the most unqualified person in here today. You feel that you don’t know enough theology, you’ve never been to Bible school, or attended church for long.
I want to tell you God wants to go with you. He longs for you to know that you are called and once you are called, your responsibility is to respond with hunger and humility and He will baptise you with His Holy Spirit. You will feel the power of God inside of you. Your unplugged life will be plugged in. His power will pulsate through your body. His power qualifies you and once you are qualified you are authorised! To be authorised is for Jesus Himself to send you. Don’t go on your own folks. It’s too dark, its too bad out there. you won’t handle it. You wont last the course.
Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power 1 Cor 2:4
(Luke 4:43) Jesus Himself was sent for this purpose; already He is sending them for this purpose. That’s what Jesus does. He lives in purposes of God. Moves in the ways of God and releases other people into the same purpose. Why? because there is no greater purpose. Steps of obedience are required to walk in the manifestation of the Word. We are called to walk by faith and not by sight.
Look what Jesus tells the disciples about their walk:
They are to take no…
Staff – You don’t need a crutch to lean on. Too many Christians are leaning on other people’s faith. Too many Christian have set up false staffs in their lives. God is your staff. He’s the only one you need. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me (Psalm 23:4). What are you leaning on? – you have Jesus. You have to let belief arise within your life today and begin to walk by faith. Too many people are okay with faith until God calls them to chuck their crutch away! People have all sorts of supports that stop them walking in faith.
“Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28)
Bag / Money – Don’t worry about money and supplies, find one house to stay in and stay there. You know some people get so preoccupied with having everything lined up in this world that they can never step out in faith for God because the risk is too big. They haven’t narrowed down their life enough to walk in faith. Everything is too comfortable. I believe God is calling some of us to lay down our comfort. Lay down our security. Go ALL IN. I don’t mean talk about being ALL IN. If He’s your Father then you can trust Him right? He is either your Father or He is not. If He is God then you can trust Him.
The bag represents our security. Maybe it had a map in it? Maybe a mobile phone? Maybe a compass? I want to tell you the only compass you need is the Word of God. I want to tell you folks. If God has said it. He will do it. I believe the church is going to come into a season of blessing. God is going to give provision for the mission.
“And My God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory, by Christ Jesus.” (Phil 4:19)
Bread – Man shall not live by bread alone – but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Jesus calls us to fast and pray. Fasting is not starvation but replacing. I wonder what it is that needs to be replaced in your life today.
I wonder what desires you have that need to be conformed to His image. I wonder what areas of your flesh cry out to be fed? I wonder what parts of you are crying out for nourishment in all of the wrong ways?
You’ve been seeking bread in all the wrong places and the Spirit of The Lord comes today to say “stop it my child”. God has a heavenly banquet but often God’s people choose a microwave meal or stale bread. You’d never do it in the natural but you do it in the spiritual all the time.
STOP – I believe there is a warning cry from the Spirit of God – its time to put away some things. It’s time to replace some things. You can’t live and move in Him with the trappings you have right now. Find a spiritual home.
Tunic – A long garment worn under the cloak next to the skin. Too many people try to cover their own shame. They wear multiple layers and garments… people do it all the time. They get addicted to tattoos or they wear revealing clothes because they find their worth in the looks they get from men, or they are scared to dress nice because they feel worthless. Clothing speaks of covering. I wonder what layers you have on your life that are stopping you from being transparent and vulnerable with God?
The Bible tells us that we have a robe of righteousness available to us. When you walk in who you are in Christ you will be set people from people’s opinions because you’ll know that God has spoken over your life. Things began to happen – communities were changed and brought to life. It alters at the altar.
