Huddles
Mentoring and coaching is a big part of the work with students at York Elim. We realise that the transition to university and beyond is a major life step, and believe that supporting students through it is an important responsibility of the church. All students have the opportunity to join a ‘Huddle’, which is what we call the same-sex mentoring groups. These offer the chance to steal some wisdom from someone a little older as well as sharing with students who will have similar experiences. We have found that these groups offer a great support to students whilst they are studying. Whether they are struggling with issues of faith, relationships or work, or want to share their joys and successes with others, huddles give their members the opportunity to have access to the wisdom of someone a little further along in life. They also mean that in terms of pastoral care, students have a contact person should they need further support. Usually huddles meet 1-2 times a month. This regular contact is a good method of discipleship, and means students frequently have an opportunity to share. They are divided into two gendered groups, with Suze (our student worker) leading the girls ones and Graham, the pastor, leading the guys group. One-to-one mentoring support is also available, as is long or short term coaching.
