Joshua 5:13–6:7; 6:17-24
Intro
A question : Did it really happen? I believe it did because the bible tells me so. Like the old children’s song: Jesus loves me this I know for the bible tells me so.
I know the bible is reliable, never having suffered a defeat by its attackers over the years. If you come across something that refutes the bible, just wait a while and it will eventually be seen to have been a hollow claim.
Archaeology supports this story and some of the unusual details. We come to that later.
Archaeology
Archaeology cannot prove that God knocked down the walls of Jericho. But archaeology can tell us whether the events reported in our ancient documents could have happened.
There have been three major excavations of the site worth commenting on.
1 By the British archaeologist John Garstang (1930–1936).
2 By the British archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon (1952–1958).
3 By the Palestinian team In the spring of 1997. The actual excavation was by two Italian archaeologists who conducted a limited excavation on the ancient tell of More >

Joshua
Joshua 1:1-18; 3:1-4:24
Intro
It is easy to see why this reading would be chosen as one of the Essential 100 readings. This not only records and event and a man’s encounter with God and his destiny, it has also spoken hope to countless believers down the centuries. They have found courage and direction here.
1) “Your territory will extend…” 1:4
God was setting the limits of their expansion, not their enemies nor their own fears.
Make sure only God sets your limits. Submit to those limits with faith but accept no other.
Duty, morality or the hand of God seen in circumstances may seen to be limiting but it is not.
Duty, morality or the hand of God, but not fear, faithlessness or the enemy of our souls.
2) “Strong and courageous” 1:6
Chapter 1 verses 6, 7, 9, 18.
3) “So I will be with you…” 1:5, 9
“You have never been this way before” 3:4
See 4:9 and the stones taken from the river bed and set up as a reminder.
