Super! Thanks. We learn so much about God's control which goes far beyond any immediate situation. Judah received such a great blessing from his dying father which may make many people raise their eyebrows in view of his track record of plotting and deceit. However, the later change in Judah's attitude reflected a complete turn round. He offered to substitute his life for Benjamin's. This is exactly what his descendant Jesus would do, indeed did, for all people.

What an excellent example of how God uses frail, vulnerable people to do great things. Wonderful!

Can't help thinking that we're incredibly blessed. God has blessed us with the Word - the OT and the NT. So, whilst we will never be able to fully understand the full person, nature and character of God, we do get to know a fair bit. Moses, whose first encounter with God would seem to be at the burning bush, did not have the advantage of our knowledge. Initially he was a man of reaction; he reacted to the Hebrew slave's situation by bumping off his aggressor and to the burning bush by immediately investigating it. It was only later when leading 2 million people in the wilderness that he learned to temper his reactive nature.

It is interesting that God did not change Moses' character (appointed Aaron as spokesman), just moulded him a tad to suit His purposes. Told to "Go!" Moses went, clutching the staff of God's presence, power and assurance.

We know that, we too, have a similar staff - The Word and The Holy Spirit.

We don't know a great deal about Zippy, just that she seemed to be a tough feisty cookie. Moses had neglected to circumcise his son, God was about to kill him (Ex 4:24-26). Zippy saved the day, took control, grabbed a knife, circumcised the boy, threw the bloodied foreskin at Moses' feet with a rather unflattering remark. Don't think I'd want to get on the wrong side of Zippy! Wonder why Moses didn't do the operation? Wonder how much experience Zippy, as a Midianite, had in the circumcision field?

We need look no further than the Bible for amazing stories!

I marvel at these stories in the OT which teach us so much about God's love, patience and Grace in the face of human failings.
The brothers were really honked off at Joseph's somewhat immature attitude and boastful manner, nor were they particularly happy over their father's apparent blatant favouritism. Add the ingredient of jealousy and we have a recipe for disaster.
Apart from Reuben and Judah we know nothing of what the other brothers said regarding the plot, just that they went along with it. As you so rightly ask, "Where do our children learn respect?"
All part of God's plan. We know what happened in Egypt. After several years of hardship, Joseph had learned an important lesson and gave all the credit for his talents and knowledge to God. His bragging nature had disappeared. The brothers were reconciled. What a fantastic story!

Hi
I know nothing about Peter's pastoral roles after the massacre and before his death, although I did speak to him several times on the phone from Dubai where I live.
He was lightly related to me by marriage as his wife Brenda was my second cousin.
But I do remember an open and friendly man and one who it was always good to speak to.
Elim Missions overseas almost seemed a family occupation, with my own parents having been Elim Missionaries in India, where I was born, Catheren Pand a Grandfather

Hi Edward,
My husband and I did know your sister in law Susan Smith and remember her well. She attended the York Elim church for quite a while before she died and was loved by all who knew her. She is with the Lord now and you will see her again one day.
God bless Joy & Gerald Seavers.

I returned from Ghana about weeks ago after spending 8 months out there doing fieldwork for my studies. I did not do only fieldwork but I also got maried to my childhood friend Abigail about 4 months ago :). And I returned to England alone so you can imagine how much I miss her each day. Two days ago I called her on phone and as usual we ended our conversation with a prayer. Unintentionally I did not end my prayer with the authoritative 'In Jesus Name we pray'. As soon as I ended the prayer with the word 'Amen' then she said 'In Jesus Name'. And I responded 'Amen'. By her action she reminded me that the authoritative name of Jesus christ means a lot to her than many words expressed in prayer without it. Thanks Graham.

Yipee! A comment! This is my first one too, sorry Suze!

In reply to yours Fran, I think God is talking about the Israelites time as slaves in Egypt. In Exodus 12:40 it says that the Israelites were in Egypt for 430 years, which fulfils the prophecy of them being enslaved in verse 13. The Israelites deliverance in verse 14 is about them in the promised land, and verse 15 relates specifically to Abram, as fulfilled in Genesis 25:8, which is yet another fulfilment!

One of the exciting things about reading prophecy in the Old Testament as Christians is reading how it spoke to the people who received it at the time, how it was fulfilled in Jewish history and then how it was fulfilled and transformed by Jesus. In relation to this passage, as Christians today we are enslaved and strangers in a country not our own, but we will 'come out with great possessions' in heaven because of Jesus' death and resurrection. When reading through Genesis, we can trust that God delivers on his promises!

Hello

I am a devout christian and follower of our Lord (Recently Baptised). It is through my berievements of which there are many in the family of Scholey that I come to you. Namely: Joyce Scholey of Pointin, Cheshire who is My beloved eldest sister in law. Also Susan Smith of Strensall, York. My beloved Youngest sister - in -law passed over several years ago (member of your congregation in York 2000) and later my beloved wife Beryl passed over in 2005. Also later My Beloved Brother in law Jack Scholey of Oldham. I wish to remember these wonderful people and I pray for them all daily. I dont know if you will remember Susan Smith but she was a well liked person in your congregation in York, she died on Christmas day and is at rest in the church grounds at Strensall as is my beloved Wife Beryl Turnbull, Together they rest in peace and the Lord speaks to me every Day of there" Well Being" which I gain great comfort from. I attend the Elim Christian centre in Plymouth at Cattdown and they do not know of my long term history. However I gain from the strength of their companionship each visit I make to their gathering. It gives me great strength and awarness of the words I recieve after my prayers, from our Almighty God.
The Lord sends to you all through my living vine and spirit, a true and sincere blessing.

God bless you all in York (My Birthplace)

Hi, I have finally got myself a copy of the book, recommended by John Usher during his service a few weeks ago “Celebration of Discipline” by Richard Foster. I think it will be a good idea to recommend a book on the topic the sermon is held, to give a broader knowledge and understanding of the subject at hand. Otherwise it way be difficult for some to have ideas of which kind of Christian books to buy/read to aid Christian living.

I am only a few pages into the book and I like its perspective on things.

God makes it quite clear very early in Genesis how important the sanctity of marriage is:
1 It is God's idea (Gen 2:18-24).
2 Commitment essential (Gen 24:58-60).
3 Romance important (Gen 29:10,11).
4 Best environment for raising children (Mal 2
 14,15).
5 Faithfulness cements bond of trust, the
foundation of all realationships (Mat 5:32)
6 Is permamment (Mat 19:6).
7 Living symbol of Christ and the church (Eph
 5:23-32).
8 Is good and honourable (Heb 13:4).
9 Holds times of great joy (Jer 7:34).
10 Is based on love, not feelings (Eph 5:21ff)
11 Ideally, only death should dissolve (Rom 7:
 2,3)

Also, it is clear that marriage is to be between man and woman. Any other state of "marriage" can only be a sin.

Graham's reminder of Jesus being born into a family with a mother and father is clearly how God intended a family to be. I cannot see how a child can be raised properly in a same sex "marriage"; nor a single parent family for I have experience of this, both as a child and a parent. It is not ideal!

Many thanks for an instructive and fascinating insight into the Magi and their function.
Also, for me, a timely reminder of some very, very important points:
1 - to be thankful to God for being in everything.
2 - not to stifle the Holy Spirit's work in our lives for the benefit of the whole "Body".
3 - to concentrate on obeying God in order to avoid tempting situations.
4 - to be joyous.
5 - to pray frequently.

Once again, many thanks and God Bless.

Yes he did very well. We only give a short spot to those learning to preach so that they do not feel they are having to carry the whole meeting. It would be a big responsibility for their first time. This was one of those occasions that it would have been great to have heard more.

Paul urges us not only to pray for each other but also to pray for our national leaders. Why has an all powerful and knowing God chosen us to help Him change the world? James tells us that "....The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results." (James 5:16). The more righteous people pray, in greater numbers, the greater the power and therefore the more resultant glory is given to God. We see that prayer works!

Likewise, I am continually thanking God for everything from the wonderful world He has given us to live in to small things that happen daily : ".....And always be thankful" (Col 3:15).

God wants us to have the right relationship with Him and others free from "anger and disputing". In Matthew 5:23,24 Jesus instructs us to interrupt our prayers, if necessary, be reconsiled with others and then resume prayers free from controversy. Blessings.

PS Graham, those who branded us as "sun worshippers" were right. They just could'nt spell!

An interesting and informative sermon delivered with care and tact. Whether or not these attibutes will be sufficient to avoid legal proceedings for the same sermon in the future, time will tell!

For me, God's Word is clear and not open to interpretation. Homosexuality is a sin. As Christians it is impossible for us to condone homosexuality and same sex marriages, nor can we condone our children being taught in sunday schools by homosexuals, our home and life groups being led by homosexuals, our youth groups being led by homosexuals or our sermons being preached by homosexuals. In this respect we cannot allow ourselves to be compromised.

Like any other sinner, homosexuals can be forgiven and their lives changed. Churches can be a refuge of repentance and healing as they turn to God without compromising the church's stance.

Perhaps sometime in the future I may be prosecuted for these words. I look forward to it!

Nice one Jo. 60 years ago I joined the Scouts whose motto is "Be prepared". A few years later I joined the RAF who are required to be in a continual state of "readiness". If someone had told me then that half a century later I would be listening to a church sermon about being ready for God I would have probably thought they`re bonkers.

You are so very right when you said that we can have so much going on in our busy modern lives which clutter up our minds that there is not a lot of room left to prepare to be ready for God. I`m going to try and praise and talk to God as I go about my daily activities; on the bus, walking, working etc etc. There is always something to talk to God about and praise him for at any time.

A thought has occurred to me of a mother changing her baby`s nappy praising and thanking God for providing her with such an acute sense of smell. I think He would appreciate that because we know that there are many instances of humour in the Bible.

"Singing in the Rain": What a Treat! While the congregation sang the song, Graham danced a la Gene Kelly, using the sound stand as a lampost, to the cheers and claps of his delighted adoring audience. Believable? The dance was a hybrid of twist, samba, rumba, solsa, crockodile rock and pole dancing! Rest assured those who could not make the service, he immediately decided not to give up the day job. Wonder why the podcast didn`t work? There goes the evidence!

The pain and loss suffered by the Israelites makes any pain I have suffered for the sake of God pale into insignificance. This is the reality. I have a mountain to be thankful for. Thank you Lord.

The putting away or banishment of foreign wives was extremely contentious for many Jews at the time. Nevertheless it was necessary because the lineage from God was therefore ensured and descendancy continues to this day.

This must be the only occasion where the "father" can be younger than his "descendant". In my case my "dad" is only a young whipper snapper of 50ish some 20 years my junior. Hope he reads this!

A powerful message this Sunday. For myself I feel a strong urge to approach God. Care to join me?

Ask for His help in our desire to be like Him, to obey Him and the strength to do what he wants.

Submit our possessions and lives to His control. Trust Him to change our desires.

What a fantastic day indeed celebrating the 10th anniversary of Graham`s ministry in York.

I am sure I speak for all when I say that we are all very proud of him and also of Penny, Alex and Zoe in their support of him.

The day also marked the 10th anniversary of my becoming a Christian. A truly memorable decade.

I just stumbled on this. I am a member of Elim Bauchi and was there when all this was happening. We give all the glory to Gos because we know that it would have been worse. I have a slide show of pictures showing the extent of damage the work in progress. I wish there was a way I could post it here. Remain blessed everyone.

Actually, I beg to differ. Peter Griffiths WAS the pastor of Northside for at least several years. I attended Northside from 1988 to 1992, and Peter was my pastor. He died from a brain tumour within a couple of years after we left Zimbabwe. I don't believe the guerrilla was a co-pastor, but the way I remember it, he worked with the church as a guard. I'm actually researching information on this story for something I'm writing now.
Thanks,
lisa

I knew Peter Grifiths personally but, while he was a member of Northside Comunity Church in Salisbury, he was not the pstor. However through his employment he DID interview the leader of that gang who wanted to attend Bible College. Peter explained that the english translation of the man's terrorist name was "War Devil".
During the discussion Peter revealed that he himself was the head of Elim at the time. This resulted in a great 'coming together and forgiveness' said Peter.
The man was never a pastor of Northside.
Hope this is of help.

It has been so special to read this remembrance. I lived in Mutare at the time. I now live in New Zealand and was telling my home group about the incident--as an example of Christian love and forgiveness. I know that Peter Griffiths went on to pastor a church in Harare and i think that one of the guerrillas in the attck was a co-pastor. Do you have any up to date information on that man. Thank you for remembering. God bless you.

Hi there. I'm really interested in your internship programme. I'm currently looking at such things for when I leave college (Spring/Summer 2009) and was wondering if you were planning on running opportunities for internships then as well, as I realise that this blog says its for 07 til 08! If so, it would be great to find out some more details from you!

In Christ,
