Sunday Sermon 5th June 2011: Determinism, Foreknowledge or an Open future?

This morning Matt Parkins brought the word. When you’re going through a tough time have you ever said “God must have his reasons”, or “Relax, God is in control?”, or are you waiting for “the one” that God has planned for you to marry since before the world even began? How do we deal with the commonly held idea that if God plans or merely foreknows the future then God planned or foreknew of every act of evil – does that make God responsible for the evil that takes place here on earth? Why doesn’t God forewarn us of evil that is about to take place? Why does God create people he knows are definitely going to go to hell, again either by design or mere foreknowledge? It is time to think about these things and what they imply of God, time and his sovereignty.

Due to time constraints Matt had to omit a section on Jeremiah 18 and Romans 9 which seem to talk about God choosing who to save and who to condemn. Matt challenges this view in brief in his talk but more thoroughly in his blog: http://www.theologyinpencil.com/jeremiah-18-and-romans-9-re-examined

Radio Adverts

In November we had two radio adverts made. They were a generous gift from one of our church members. At some point we will use them on the radio but we thought we’d let you listen to them now. We like them – we hope you do too!

Landlord ordered to pay up

Landlords have routinely withheld rent deposits from students in York. All that was supposed to have changed when the last government brought in a new system obliging all deposits to be left with their bond scheme.

Mr Andrew Akpoko was a student at York University and was dismayed when his deposit was withheld in July 2009 by his landlord, Arran Ramsey of Hestllington Road. Andrew should have been then able to appeal to the bond scheme but Mr Ramsey had not followed the new law. Perhaps Mr Ramsey thought this student would let matters rest as Andrew had to move away from York. However, this student had help.

Pastor Graham is the Pentecostal Chaplain at York University as well as Senior Pastor of our church. Graham offered to help and he encouraged Andrew to make a claim through the Small Claims Court.

Although Andrew now knew that the penalty for a landlord not using the government bond scheme was three times the amount of the rent deposit, it was decided that the first step was to give Mr Ramsey an opportunity pay what he owed. Graham was given authority to act on Andrews behalf and wrote to Mr Ramsey inviting him to More >

Gathering Talk, 7th November 2010, The Lord’s Prayer – Part II

Jo completed her talk on the Lord’s Prayer by looking at the second half. Apologies that the first part was not recorded.

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Does this mean that God will lead us into temptation if we don’t ask him not to? Find out by listening in!

Africa United

Africa United is a film that opened in UK cinemas recently which tells the extraordinary story of three Rwandan children and their dream to take part in the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup.

During their 3000 mile journey, viewers encounter an Africa few people ever see; experience an epic adventure across seven countries; and feel the joy, laughter and hope that comes from making an incredible journey together. Africa United is a dramatic, heartfelt and enchanting story set to enthral family audiences worldwide. But it also provides a fantastic opportunity to raise important issues with a wide audience. Two lead characters are AIDS orphans and the friends they make along the way include a child soldier and a child in prostitution. Really unusually for a major feature film, the writer, producers and director are all Christians.

Africa United will be shown at Vue Cinema (York) this weekend.

Formation of Home-groups

If you filled in a home-group survey form at The Teaching service and selected Tuesday or Wednesday as the evenings that you could make a home-group, then we’d like to invite you to a meeting to begin forming groups. Tonight (Tuesday 19th October) at 7.30pm, which is straight after the AGM at 7pm, and tomorrow night (Wednesday 20th October) again at 7.30pm at Elim Corner.

We’re hoping it will be informal evening of coffee drinking and chatting around tables, where the emphasis will be on joining a group that feels right to you – certainly no pressure anyway!

Elim Corner, First Floor, 47-49 Lawrence Street, York, YO10 3BU

See you tonight or Wednesday!

Now working on Internet Explorer

Apologies to those of you who have attempted to access the website via Internet Explorer and have just found it to be more or less blank. For the geeks out there this was due to a quirk in Internet Explorer in that it ignores doctype declarations if there is preceding whitespace. This has now been fixed to accommodate the strange way in which Internet Explorer works, but may we take the opportunity to recommend moving away from using Internet Explorer use a browser that is both faster, more secure and compliant to the latest web standards.

We recommend Google Chrome, but you can also use Mozilla’s Firefox, or Apple’s Safari, etc.
