Filling David’s shoes…

This weeks passages move on from King David, to his son, Solomon. David had been an incredible king who had an amazing relationship with God which was inspiring. God had done a lot through him, but it then became time for Solomon to take over- he had big shoes to fill. Let’s see how he got on…

* 1 Kings 2, 3

In this first passage, we see how David passing on his responsibilities as king, to his son, Solomon. David is confident of Solomon’s wisdom and consequently commands him to settle some old scores once he becomes king. This applies pressure to the relatively young King Solomon, although it is an encouragement from his father that he believes in Solomon’s capabilities. How are we influenced by our father’s encouragement (or lack of it)? As a parent, what type of influence would you like to be?

In chapter 3 of 1 Kings, we see Solomon asking God to give him wisdom, above any worldly desires like long life or money. When we see this wisdom in action, we can recognise that it really is a gift from God. However, despite having a strong faith like his father, he also made choices that would More >

A Father of Many Nations… but how?!

This weeks passages look again at the life of Abram and the relationship he had with God.

* Genesis 15

In this passage, Abram confesses his concern for his lack of family to inherit his land.When God first called Abram He promised to make him into a great nation. Yet, since Abram and Sarai do not have children, this seems impossible. However, God dispels this worry by promising that Abram will soon have an heir- in fact his descendants will be as many as the stars in the sky!  Abram and Sarai were obviously very sensitive about being childless, and all God’s talk of them one day being the founders of a great nation, was a real test of their faith.

Abram also doubted that he would be able to take possession of the land that God gave him. God fills Abram in on a bit of the plan knowing that this is the encouragement that Abram needs.

God doesn’t chose to always tell us His plan in advance. Yet, if we look at what God has done in the past (in both our own lives, and in the bible), then we can know that he will be faithful to us in His plans More >

Sunday Sermon 12th September 2010, Jews and Genealogies, King Jesus and Citizenship

Unfortunately, the mp3 player has not worked again! It is a new device and we are having some teething problems. I did say that I would put my sermon notes up though so here they are.

Jesus, King

1. Jews and Genealogies

Intro. (From the OT to Matthew)

If there is one thing that could be said of the Jews, it’s that they were evidently very concerned about genealogies. Just look at: Genesis 4, 5, 10, 11, 22, 25, 36, 46; Numbers 3 and 26; Ruth 4; Ezra 7; Nehemiah 11-12; 1 Chronicles and 2 Chronicles. That’s just the Old Testament. Another indication of the importance of genealogies to the Jews is that Matthew’s gospel (specifically tailored to a Jewish readership) includes a genealogy of Jesus earthly family. Let’s turn to it now.

A Our Reaction to Genealogies (Skimmed over, 2 examples)

They are often ignored: There’s a story of an old Scots Minister who was reading from this first chapter of Matthew’s gospel, he started reading, “Abraham begat Isaac, and Isaac beget Jacob and Jacob begat Judah,” and he looked on ahead and saw the list to follow and said, “and they kept on begetting one another all the way down this page and halfway More >

We continued looking at Chapter 4 of Paul’s second letter to Timothy this morning.

2 Timothy 4:6-8

Assurance – Only God can give it. Paul had it, Pharaoh did not.

I have been reading about Pharaoh. As I read I found myself comparing him to what I had been reading about Paul’s character in today’s study. In his conflict with Moses we think of Pharaoh as unmovable. A look at the record, however shows that he vacillated between an apparent repentance and rebellion. Pharaoh illustrates the turmoil of a man disconnected from God when compared to the peace that Paul shows in this letter as he faces his death.

See:

Exodus 7:13 Yet Pharaoh’s heart became hard and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said. After the plague of frogs,

8:15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said.

The Plague of Gnats 8:16-19

Then the LORD said to Moses, Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the ground,’ and throughout the land of Egypt the dust will become gnats. They did this, and when More >

Sermon 5th July ’09, Celebrating 10 years of ministry

Today’s service was a very special one as we marked 10 years of Graham’s ministry. Graham believed it was a Sunday like any other but unbeknown to him we’d planned for Geoff Feasey (the regional superintendant in charge of the area when Graham was appointed) to preach, we read out messages of support sent in by people who had been touched by Graham’s friendship and ministry we had some visitors who used to attend our church regularly and we had planned a lunch buffet at our new building. Graham was moved to tears.
