In this section we look at the questions of Thomas and Philip. Before we look at those questions we shall imagine an extra disciple called Bob and invent a question for him.
(a) What question could Bob ask?
(b) How would you classify his question? Fear, lack of faith, lack of understanding etc?
Now look at the questions of Thomas and Philip. What do you think was the problem of each of them as expressed in the questions? How do you classify their questions?

Sermon John 14:1-4
Intro A question. Is the following referring to the future, or walking with God in this life? Psalm 16:11 You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
Answer? It is past, present and future.
“Let not your heart..” Whose? Peter’s in particular. In his writing John is careful to record the singular (heart, not as in NIV Bible), contrary to normal Greek and Latin practice, but according to the Hebrew or Aramaic practice of the “distributive singular”. Jesus speaks to each individual.

Sermon John 13:31 – 14:4Intro Some say the chapter break here is natural as there is a pause there before the subject change. I see a flow in the narrative across the chapter break. After themes shared in chapter 13, the readers are told in the beginning of chapter 14 that all will be well.
1) Seeking v33 “You will seek me”
Seek, seek, seek!
He said they would seek, feel the want of him. Authentic faith seeks (yes and finds) and yet always seeks for more.
John 6:67-69 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you More >

He washed the feet of Judas too.
What did Judas feel as Jesus washed his feet?

He draws them close. He speaks of them being chosen.
V33-35 – Had they all mainly connected with Jesus only? How much fellowship had they had with each other? Not much I think. See Luke 22:24 (“A dispute arose…”)
Jesus now goes on to bring them into fellowship with each other. His departure will mean they will fall upon each other as never before. We know they did. Jesus is the connection point in our Christian relationships.

Sermon John 13:1It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father.
“Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.” NIV

New Sermon Series Beginning 29 July ’07
Jul 24th
Graham’s new preaching series is to be on John’s Gospel, chapters 13 to 17.
Come back here each week for notes and podcasts.
Sermon, Sun 22nd July ‘07 – Gambling
Jul 22nd
One of the early actions by Gordon Brown as new Prime Minister was to halt what had seemed to many Christians like an unstoppable train. The so called “Super Casinos” were opposed by so many churches and social groups. To those opposition groups this news has been hailed as very good news indeed.
Why would Christians be against these casinos when they were being hailed as a means of regenerating poor districts such as in Manchester?
In this sermon Graham brings a Biblical perspective on the subject of gambling.
A resource was mentioned from the Christian Institute, click HERE to go to those notes.

Sermon, Sun 15th July ‘07 – 2nd Coming of Jesus – final Part
Jul 15th
This is part 10, the final part of this series on the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.
This week we are again looking at the predictions concerning Israel, its gathering and blossoming, and its final enemies. Will Jerusalem ever be defeated? Or will it be a rock immovable?
In his introduction Graham mentioned a clay tablet inscription deciphered 130 years after it was excavated. It has been hailed as a breakthrough for biblical archaeology. It mentions the name of a court official of King Nebuchadnezzar who is also mentioned in the Old Testament. Nebo-Sarsekim, the royal officer mentioned in the 2,600-year-old Babylonian inscription, also appears in Jeremiah’s account of Nebuchadnezzar’s siege of Jerusalem.
