Radio Adverts

In November we had two radio adverts made. They were a generous gift from one of our church members. At some point we will use them on the radio but we thought we’d let you listen to them now. We like them – we hope you do too!

Landlord ordered to pay up

Landlords have routinely withheld rent deposits from students in York. All that was supposed to have changed when the last government brought in a new system obliging all deposits to be left with their bond scheme.

Mr Andrew Akpoko was a student at York University and was dismayed when his deposit was withheld in July 2009 by his landlord, Arran Ramsey of Hestllington Road. Andrew should have been then able to appeal to the bond scheme but Mr Ramsey had not followed the new law. Perhaps Mr Ramsey thought this student would let matters rest as Andrew had to move away from York. However, this student had help.

Pastor Graham is the Pentecostal Chaplain at York University as well as Senior Pastor of our church. Graham offered to help and he encouraged Andrew to make a claim through the Small Claims Court.

Although Andrew now knew that the penalty for a landlord not using the government bond scheme was three times the amount of the rent deposit, it was decided that the first step was to give Mr Ramsey an opportunity pay what he owed. Graham was given authority to act on Andrews behalf and wrote to Mr Ramsey inviting him to More >

George’s Adventures

It was great to hear what George Critchley is planning once he leaves us at the end of his time at uni.

He told the church on Sunday that he is going to work as an intern for a Christian charity called Damaris that produces teaching resources to schools and churches.

Their vision is to create people that are both biblically informed, and culturally informed, with the ability to relate the two. With this in mind, they do a thing called ‘CultureWatch’ which looks through secular films for an underlying message that asks questions about life, as well as seeing what answers the Bible and a life with God provide.

This interests us as our church likes to be aware of contemporary culture, having an occasional “culture watch” small group, discussing books and films.

George will be involved in shooting, directing, and editing the short films that do this kind of work. See the short he made while he was down there

See another example of their approach here.

Damaris be working on an account for Disney, producing resources about the Narnia film, Prince Caspian.

George’s internship is unpaid, though they will provide money to cover bed and board for the three/four months he is working there. Our church More >

We are on the Radio

We were recorded for BBC Radio York on the Wednesday evening. Church members come together specially and the musicians did a great job.

However, the day afterwards it became apparent that the sound quality was not good enough. So on Sunday 4th May we were recorded during our main Sunday morning meeting. It was broadcast on Julia Booth’s programme yesterday.

You can hear it by going to Julia’s programme and we are on about three minutes after the start of the show.

This link should get you there.

A big “Thank you” to all who helped.

Alister McGrath Vs Richard Dawkins

When you look at Alister’s McGrath’s performance here, the phrase “doesn’t give an inch” comes to mind. This interview, that was filmed for the documentary “The Root Of All Evil” starring Richard Dawkins, didn’t make the final cut. I wonder why? Perhaps for the same reason Alister’s books are not mentioned in the God Delusion.

See this very British, very civilised and very frank exchange of opinions here. It’s thrilling stuff!

Sermon 25th Nov ’07, (Luc Favre – guest speaker)

Luc pastors an Elim church near Lake Geneva, in France. The recording volume is a bit low for the first minute or so but the volume does go up so you can hear this inspiring sermon on the theme of “passion”.

Humorous (yet worrying) Animation about Mormon Beliefs

Our very own pastor was raised a Mormon and can verify that the information in this animation is an accurate portrayal of Mormon beliefs, although some of it is kept secret from their members until they reach a certain level of Mormonism.
