Radio Adverts

In November we had two radio adverts made. They were a generous gift from one of our church members. At some point we will use them on the radio but we thought we’d let you listen to them now. We like them – we hope you do too!

Landlord ordered to pay up

Landlords have routinely withheld rent deposits from students in York. All that was supposed to have changed when the last government brought in a new system obliging all deposits to be left with their bond scheme.

Mr Andrew Akpoko was a student at York University and was dismayed when his deposit was withheld in July 2009 by his landlord, Arran Ramsey of Hestllington Road. Andrew should have been then able to appeal to the bond scheme but Mr Ramsey had not followed the new law. Perhaps Mr Ramsey thought this student would let matters rest as Andrew had to move away from York. However, this student had help.

Pastor Graham is the Pentecostal Chaplain at York University as well as Senior Pastor of our church. Graham offered to help and he encouraged Andrew to make a claim through the Small Claims Court.

Although Andrew now knew that the penalty for a landlord not using the government bond scheme was three times the amount of the rent deposit, it was decided that the first step was to give Mr Ramsey an opportunity pay what he owed. Graham was given authority to act on Andrews behalf and wrote to Mr Ramsey inviting him to More >

Africa United

Africa United is a film that opened in UK cinemas recently which tells the extraordinary story of three Rwandan children and their dream to take part in the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup.

During their 3000 mile journey, viewers encounter an Africa few people ever see; experience an epic adventure across seven countries; and feel the joy, laughter and hope that comes from making an incredible journey together. Africa United is a dramatic, heartfelt and enchanting story set to enthral family audiences worldwide. But it also provides a fantastic opportunity to raise important issues with a wide audience. Two lead characters are AIDS orphans and the friends they make along the way include a child soldier and a child in prostitution. Really unusually for a major feature film, the writer, producers and director are all Christians.

Africa United will be shown at Vue Cinema (York) this weekend.

York Elim Recruiting New Youth Worker

York Elim is recruiting a new part-time Youth Worker.

We are looking for a person who cares about the young people in our community and in our church. Someone with a lively faith in Jesus Christ and a sense of enjoying doing the work God has called them into.

The new youth worker will be starting their ministry among us at an exciting time. Over the past ten years, our church has experienced transformation from a small city centre congregation, to a vibrant centre of teaching and worship, serving all ages and about 20 nationalities, including a large number of uni students.

We have recently acquired a suite of offices and meeting rooms close to the city centre, these form a base for midweek activities including youth work.

Closing date for applications is Thursday 30th April 2009.

St Lawrence’s Church, York

St Laurence’s Church, York

Since we moved our Sunday meetings out of our old building in the centre of York and into the school, we have experienced rapid growth. We are now frequently full with standing room only at the back. We urgently need a new larger place.

St Laurence’s Church of England is near our present location and we had thought it could be our future home. We had talks with the Anglican Church and had agreed to enter into a building share arrangement. However, before the share agreement was signed St Laurence’s church changed their mind about sharing their building with us. They wanted to try and grow without us taking their prime morning service time. We can hardly blame them.

We have now come to terms with this and are now looking elsewhere to accommodate our growing church. For those interested in the site, the story of St Lawrence’s is as follows:

The Old Church

There’s been a church here since the 1100′s. The tower of this original church is still standing in the churchyard and almost hidden by tall trees in summer. It is the surviving remnant of the medieval church dating from 1316, which served the parish just outside More >

York Elim on the Radio

Radio York have informed us that our next programme will be broadcast Sunday 25th May 7am & 7pm.

A New Pastor at York Elim

Thank you all of you who have been praying.

Many in our church locally, including friends now scattered in various nations, have known about our efforts to enlarge our ministry team to cope with the rapid growth in our church. We have talked with a few people over the past two years but each time it ended up without an appointment.

I am delighted to announce that Matthew Parkins will be joining us from the beginning of June. Matthew and his wife Joanne have worked in Sheffield at St Thomas’s, then more recently in a church in Australia. They arrive with their daughter Scarlett.

Matthew has his own blog (click here) where you can see a video of Scarlett dancing.

House-hunting will be occupying them over the next few weeks, so you if you know of anywhere nice to rent let us know. Probably not the one advertised on my blog!

Again, thank you to all who have been praying about this appointment. I am so relieved. I think they will fit very well.

Global Day of Prayer, York ’08

A great crowd gathered in York Minster on Sunday May 11th for the Global Day of Prayer.

We were called together to pray by a great trumpet blast then we prayed in various formats, led by various people through the evening.

There was a joint ‘act of turning’ as we forgave, confessed our personal sin and that of our nation.

The church leaders of the city and surrounding areas were called out into the great aisle of the Nave of York Minster as we prayed for them, releasing a blessing and calling for the spirit of Jesus to form the fruits of Galatians 5 in their lives.

We called out for revival, then began a ‘prayer parade’ as we walked around a 12 part display in the minster, past prayer points for our council, education and health services, police, churches and the many facets of greater York.

We prayed for our world, with the nations of Burma and Zimbabwe very much on our hearts. After focusing on some youth issues we all joined together for the world prayer and declarations. Representatives of various nations from our church led the closing world prayer.

At the close the Lord Mayor and her party lead us out of the building with More >
