Sunday Sermon 5th June 2011: Determinism, Foreknowledge or an Open future?
This morning Matt Parkins brought the word. When you’re going through a tough time have you ever said “God must have his reasons”, or “Relax, God is in control?”, or are you waiting for “the one” that God has planned for you to marry since before the world even began? How do we deal with the commonly held idea that if God plans or merely foreknows the future then God planned or foreknew of every act of evil – does that make God responsible for the evil that takes place here on earth? Why doesn’t God forewarn us of evil that is about to take place? Why does God create people he knows are definitely going to go to hell, again either by design or mere foreknowledge? It is time to think about these things and what they imply of God, time and his sovereignty.
Due to time constraints Matt had to omit a section on Jeremiah 18 and Romans 9 which seem to talk about God choosing who to save and who to condemn. Matt challenges this view in brief in his talk but more thoroughly in his blog: http://www.theologyinpencil.com/jeremiah-18-and-romans-9-re-examined
